Oscar - Week Thirty Eight

So first off, Oscar's skull update:

Oscar would not sleep in the crib they had for him so he slept on me which meant that I did not sleep at all.   And first thing when he woke up, he pulled the IV right out of his hand.  They had to have an IV for the MRI so another nurse came in to put it in again.  She was much better at it than the ER nurse.  She got it in on the first try and it was in his arm not on his hand.  Much better placement.

On Wednesday morning he had to do an MRI which takes about an hour. He had to be put under anesthesia for that since there's no way to keep a baby still for that long.  That was probably the scariest part of my day - and ugh the waiting was just brutal.  He was only out of my care for about an hour and a half total.  I tried to sleep but it was hard to shut my brain off.

My grandparents came up to the hospital to visit right when Oscar got back from the MRI. They were both so glad to hold him and see that he was ok.

The results came a little later.  Basically, Oscar's fracture is long but not displaced much.  They do not need to do surgery and it will heal on it's own.  There was much less bleeding than they originally thought but that is because he has more fluid around his brain than a typical baby.  His skull is bigger than his brain which means that it can float around more and bump into the skull harder than a typical baby.  So the 'old' bleed could have been from anything - probably from a typical baby-falling-over bump or something similar.  The doctor did not seem concerned about the 'bleeds' at all. We will have a follow up appointment in the next week or two to make sure Oscar is still healing ok.

After we got that report we were allowed to take the neck brace off.  Oscar was so relieved.  I could feel his little body relax. After that we were just waiting to be officially released.  It took forever.

We got home at about 5:30pm on Wednesday and Oscar went to sleep almost immediately.  I took a shower, ate something that was not hospital food, and I was asleep by 9pm. And I slept hard - until 6:30am, which is an hour and a half later than normal.  I felt much better after the shower and even better after a good night's sleep.

We had to keep Oscar home from daycare for a week according to the doctor's orders. I stayed home Thursday, mostly because I was still fairly exhausted.  Oscar was pretty much back to normal but he did sleep longer on each nap than he normally does.  He was exhausted too.

Friday he went to my Aunt and Uncle's house.  My aunt is a substitute teacher and my uncle works from home so they were able to help us out with watching Oscar for this no-daycare week. Jose was off on Monday and then they watched him today and they will tomorrow.

On Friday, we got Oscar's first school pictures back.  He looks like a criminal in a mug shot.  He's got such a serious face.  It makes me laugh every time I see it!

I wanted to take Oscar out to do something fun on Saturday because of the awful week we have had.  So I took him to the zoo for an hour.  It was hot but I think he enjoyed being out and about.

Oscar is really feeling like himself again after the weekend.  We are so relieved to see him playing and smiling and acting like his normal happy self again.
