The Life and Times of Kylo Ren Medina - Chapter 2
Kylo’s First Day With His Family
When I saw Kylo for the first time I felt my heart skip a beat. You know the feeling when you see something that is just so completely, unbelievable, ridiculously, adorable that you take a gasp of breath and then melt into an awwww. It was that multiplied by 1,000. He was so unbelievably small we couldn’t even take it. He was literally hidden behind this woman’s foot. And then he started walking to follow her around and he was even more cute because he was a little bit unstable and drunk looking and he sort of hopped around to keep up with her giant steps compared to his tiny ones.
It was love at first sight.
The woman and I exchanged money and paperwork and then he was ours.
We scooped him up into our arms and thanked them for helping bring him into the world and we went outside with him. They had some grassy area near our car so we took him over to the grass to see if he needed to go potty before we got back into the car to start our long trip home.
He popped around the grass a little bit and we took some pictures of him in the grass. And then we started our long journey home.
Kylo seemed kind of scared and cold so we tried putting him in a fleece jacket that was way too big for him but the jacket didn’t seem to calm him much so I decided to put him into my jacket so he could hear my heart beat and get some of my warmth.
Kylo seemed to like it in my jacket a lot more. He calmed down and then started wanting to explore. He started sniffing the air and looking out the windows and looking at his new papa. He climbed around my lap and sniffed me all over.
We drove for about an hour and then stopped to give Kylo a break from the car. We found a grassy area off the road and pulled over. We let him wander around the grass by himself for a bit just to see how he would react to the freedom and he wandered off and went potty and then came right back to us. He was a very smart dog and he knew not to go potty near us but he also knew that we were his people now.
The grass in some places was almost as tall as Kylo. He was so tiny!
After Kylo frolicked around in the grass for a little bit he seemed to slow down and started cuddling us so we picked him up and started driving again.
We stopped for gas at some point and got food for ourselves but by that point we just wanted to get home so we just kept driving and Kylo slept in my lap. We made it back to the rental car place and switched cars again. And finally we made it home with our new little one.
We were living in an apartment on the second floor at the time so we introduced Kylo to our apartment. We showed him his toys and his kennel and his bed. We showed him how to ring the bells we had hung on our door to go outside. We took him outside and showed him our front yard. We let him run around the living room and tried to get him to play with some toys. He didn’t really know what to do with most of the toys at first but he did love to cuddle with his bear. The bear and Kylo were about the same size at the beginning. We started calling the bear Beary and Kylo slept with him pretty much every night of his life.
When we put him in the kennel without a blanket while we were feeding him the first time he was too small to get out. The little 1.5 inch lip at the bottom of the cage was too big for him to get out of. We had no idea that he was going to be this tiny! We just kept laughing and saying, “He’s so small!”
So the plan was to get him acclimated to his kennel the first night. We fed him in there and we put him in there and we laid down to go to sleep. And it all started just fine. But then Ky started whining/crying/whimpering. So I got up and took him downstairs to the grass because I figured that he had to go potty. He did. So then I brought him back up and put him back in his kennel. Immediately when I put him down he started to cry. It was unbearable. I had to get him out of the kennel. When I picked him up he stopped crying and when I put him down he started crying. At this point it was late and I was tired from the two days of driving and the car wreck adrenaline and the anticipation of Kylo. We settled on sleeping on the couch together and he would wake me up every hour or so to go out and go potty. It wasn’t the best sleep for me but it was definitely the best bonding we could have done throughout the night.
