Y the last man is a ridiculous portrayal of women.

First I want to say I LOVE apocalyptic fiction so I was excited for this show and I was trying to get my hands on the comic before the show came out.

I have not read the comics so if they differ from the show I’m not talking about them.

The premise of the show is that something caused all males beings to die. Animals and humans included. (Except for this one dude name Yorick or ‘Y’)

However there are some huge short comings when it comes to this show.

The title itself is annoying. In this apocalypse most men died so in a literal world of women the story is still named after a dude. What the hell?! I mean I get it Y is the anomaly so that’s what makes conflict, blah, blah, blah. It’s still a story about mostly women that is still named after a dude. Annoying.

In the first two episodes, (which is how far I’ve gotten in the series at this time) the story gets to about 62 days after all the men died. At that time the power has gone out or is going out, there are huge riots, and all the women are still weepy and crying and barely holding it together.

Are you fucking kidding me?!

That is insane.

I get that losing half the world’s population would be a huge tragedy and loss and I’m not downplaying that amount of loss but women are not idiots. There are women working in every field and industry, in the United States at least. Not to mention pretty much all of us know how to search the internet and learn new things.

There would be a period of grieving but women know how to solve problems and if my power went out while I was grieving I would still figure out a way to get power. There are generators and gasoline. And women also know how to ask for help. The women working in the power plants would put out a call for help running the place. And other women would answer because they want power too and there’s no one else to do it.

When “all the men” went to war in WWII women stepped into the jobs and roles they left behind seamlessly and they planted victory gardens and continued living perfectly fine. Women can do literally anything that men can do - even when they are grieving. Women work in food and water plants and drive trucks and work in factories and literally everywhere else.

As for the rioting-literally why? Why would we riot the capital just because the men died? That makes no sense to me. I mean maybe there are some crazies that would blame the government but full scale rioting at the capital seems off to me. It makes more sense to blame an act of terrorism or a biological weapon or something from some other country. Why would we go straight to blaming our own county? It makes no sense.

And the continued weepy-ness is just utter nonsense. No functional adult woman I know can cry for 60 days. It’s just not possible. So to watch high power political women be weepy for 60 days is just utter nonsense.

Yes we would be sad but life goes on. Maybe that sounds glib but seriously think of any woman you know who has a job in or out of the home. Now think of the last time that woman lost someone close to her. Did she cry in meetings at work for more than two months? Did she cry at work even a week later? For most women that answer is no. When there is a job to do we get it done. I can even get work done while I’m crying.

Grieving mothers still mother. Grieving grandmothers still mother. And in a tragedy they tend to mother more than just their own children. I can think of at least 10 adult women who I could go to for help if I needed food, water, and shelter who would gladly take me in. Not to mention that I would do the same for many women that I know. In times of tragedy most people pull together with their community to survive and eventually thrive.

So to sit there and watch the president of the United States (a woman who was an elected state Congress person) 60ish days after a tragedy, failing at giving a motivational speech while quivering and trying not to break down is beyond my comprehension even in a world of suspended disbelief.

Also how is no one making a plan? Can we get a crew to start burying bodies? Can we get a group to work on powering major cities? Can we get a group making sure food is growing? Why is no one planning for the future? They are just using up whatever resources they have at the moment and then acting like they can’t do anything to fix the fact that they are running out of resources. Like, what? If we are running out of things in my household we make a plan of how to get more. Right now that involves making a list and going to the store but in this show universe I can still do something to get more. If I know I’m going to need food for the winter I can start canning vegetables and stocking up on what I have available. There are half as many people so we wouldn’t have to fight for food at first. There would be plenty for everyone who was left. I would go to Lowe’s and get seeds for next year and I would look up how to harvest seeds from growing plants. There are so many things I can think of to do in this universe that literally no one is doing. Everyone should be planting food in their yards and learning how to make water and power plants run. Also let’s find some books about theses things or print out how to do it because the making the internet work may not be a priority for everyone right away.

No one is doing anything productive in this show. They are just sitting around using up resources and I just can’t take this misogynistic bullshit.

Women would not break down and let the world break down around them in the face of losing all the men in the world. They would band together and fight and work for a better world for their children. (Because yes we can have children without men too!)

Watch the first two episodes and tell me I’m wrong.

I’ll probably continue watching because my husband likes the comics but I’m already sorta over the premise that women can’t run the world successfully. Bitch please. We already do.
